Help native pollinators (and pollinate your garden) by keeping a simple mason bee house! Mason bees are super-efficient pollinators native to North America. They don’t sting and don’t make honey. Mason bees are what are known as solitary bees, living in single structures (tubes) versus colonies. They are low maintenance (cleaning the tubes once per year) and efficiently and effectively pollinate their immediate area during a few weeks in mid-late spring. They especially love orchard trees! An optimal location to hang your mason bee house is 7 feet off the ground, preferably under an eave of your house, garage, shed or some other shelter.
